So much for this Serkis act.

Playing the alpha ape Caesar in “War for the Planet of the Apes” caused actor Andy Serkis to reflect on humanity.

“We live in a world that sadly is getting closer to not being able to empathize with other cultures, other people, people of different color, people of different belief systems, different species,” he told us at the film’s SVA Theater premiere.

Serkis has enjoyed his hairy character’s evolution, which started with 2011’s “Rise of the Planet of the Apes,” contnued in 2014’s “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes,” and ends in “War of the Planet of the Apes,” which opens Friday. And he’s said to see Caesar go.

“I adored playing this role,” he confessed. “He’s evolving. You see him change from a pure chimpanzee to an almost-human and charting that course over three movies has been extraordinary.”

Serkis’ career has been full of colorful roles, including “Lord of the Rings” and 2005’s “King Kong,” where he again donned a monkey suit to play the title role.

“There’s nothing special about what I do,” Serkis said. “I’m an actor playing a character and I choose characters that mean something personal to me.”

Whether or not apes are suited to run the world, Serkis isn’t sure.
